Rome rediscovers cycling — and theft follows
Rome's cycling infrastructure has expanded significantly, with new protected lanes along the Tiber and through the EUR district. But as more Romans cycle, theft has surged. Community reports on Ronda show clear patterns.
Termini Station: the epicentre
The area around Roma Termini is by far the worst for bike theft. The station's massive foot traffic, transient population and multiple escape routes (metro, bus, train) make it ideal for thieves. Bikes locked anywhere within a 500m radius are at high risk.
Trastevere and the historic centre
The cobbled streets of Trastevere, beloved by tourists and locals alike, see constant theft — especially during aperitivo hours (18:00–21:00). The Centro Storico around Piazza Navona and Campo de' Fiori is similarly risky, with tourists as the primary targets.
San Lorenzo and Pigneto
These student and nightlife districts see overnight theft as the main pattern. Bikes locked outside bars and restaurants are systematically hit between midnight and 06:00.
Staying safe in Rome
Italian-made locks from Viro or Abus Italia are well-regarded. Always lock through the frame to an immovable object — Roman thieves are known to lift bikes over low poles. Report every theft on Ronda and to the Carabinieri — community data is building the picture police need.
