Amsterdam's open secret
Bike theft in Amsterdam is so common that locals joke about it being a rite of passage. But the numbers are serious: tens of thousands of bikes are stolen annually, and recovery rates remain low. Ronda's community data reveals the real hotspots.
Station areas dominate
Amsterdam Centraal and its surroundings account for a disproportionate share of thefts. The bike parking garages under the station have reduced theft somewhat, but the side streets off Damrak and around Nieuwmarkt remain dangerous.
De Pijp, Jordaan and Oud-West
These popular residential areas see constant theft. The narrow streets and dense bike parking make it easy for thieves to work unnoticed. Late-night thefts between 01:00 and 05:00 are the norm here.
Professional gangs
Dutch police have identified organised groups who steal bikes to order, often shipping them to Eastern Europe. They typically use battery-powered angle grinders and can cut through most locks in under 30 seconds.
Smart prevention
The best defence is a combination: a good ART-2 or ART-3 rated lock, GPS tracking (like an Apple AirTag hidden in the frame), and always locking to a fixed object. Report every theft on Ronda — community data helps police identify patterns and catch gangs.
